Like everybody, I receive forwarded letters, petitions, news articles from my friends and family. 50 percent of these forwards are right-wing, bigoted, hate-mongering pieces of garbage from people complaining about what the liberals are up to. Usually the information they pass on reveals that they barely understood, or are purposely misrepresenting the news they purport to have read. The latest went like this: An email complains that illegal aliens who get paid in cash will now be allowed to tap into our (let us bow our heads and pray to our almighty birthright) Social Security. Added to the letter was a …

It's my 52nd birthday today. How many years has it been since Joseph McCarthy et al cut the balls of our Constitution? Now it's Bush et al, only Bush is just the knife-wielder. There's somebody secret and quiet behind Dick Cheney. And someone secret and quiet behind that guy, too.

You want proof? Don't be naive. If it can be done, it will be done, by either side. If the Democrats win in a landslide, will you keep your mouth shut?

The parallel between these "Jesus" camps (there are more than one) and the Islamic madrasa that teach extreme views and violence is an obvious one. And, as "opeluboy" says, "I think our republic can weather this." It is because our country does not YET embrace this kind of extremism that we will hopefully "weather" it. Who knows, though? If we were under constant terrorist attack as some Muslim countries are, I'm sure these fringe groups' simple, violent solutions would suddenly appear palatable. And if you keep an ear out for what is said by Pastors John Hagee, James Dobson and other …

Another thing: the author suggests we fight or pack our bags. The fight has to start with intelligence. That means the FBI finds out who is supporting these people (whose leaders suspiciously have too much time on their hands), and the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms bureau of the US Treasury finds out what kinds of weapons and fertilizers they're caching.

i love youtube. where else can you watch videos of dan hicks young and old, or k.d. lang being interviewed by canadian television? it's for video clips what the internet was for information. type the name of what you want to see in the search field and if someone who had it lying around has uploaded it, you get to see it. you have to have a high speed internet to make it any fun, i guess. thankfully, that is one thing i have spent money on this year. want to see what the halls of your old high school look …

Regarding animal rights folks: My neighbor was an animal rights supporter, especially the rights of cats. She took in strays, even took in MY two cats, and wouldn't give them back until she had "taught" me to feed them the best cat food (9 Lives 100% canned tuna), to entertain them with catnip, etc. I told the lady, "If these cats were bigger than you, they'd be eating you." She didn't respond. Regarding cows: except for those raised shoulder to shoulder in dusty Colorado and Kansas stockyards, cattle lead a beautiful two- or three-year life. How many times have you driven …

OK, let me amend that sentence, "If you COULD ask them if they would have preferred not to have been born..." Of course, if you asked them now, their response would be, "Moo."

AIPAC AIPAC AIPAC AIPAC AIPAC AIPAC AIPAC Did you read what this man Odom had to say? "it’s pretty hard to imagine us going into Iraq without the strong lobbying efforts from AIPAC [American Israeli Public Affairs Committee] and the neocons, who think they know what’s good for Israel more than Israel knows. The invisible elephant in the room on this issue is the Israeli factor." AIPAC's lobbying efforts should be front page news every day. AIPAC should be a household word. Their policies should be known to every American child. And especially to every Christian who votes right-wing conservative. AIPAC …

I mean, yes, AIPAC did want us to go into Iraq. But it was to remove WMD's and Hussein so that Israel would feel safe. So Hussein's gone now, any weaponry is hidden or moved, and woops, now Iran's got a crazy man as its leader. AIPAC must have known the crazies would get in power if we went into Iraq. Why did they insist upon it? Was it just a bad choice? Bad luck? Incompetence in the intelligence/leadership of AIPAC?

They're stupid to criticize someone's god. That god is not around to defend himself, and his believers have no ability to see other than what they've been told. If the Danes are angry about Muslim terrorism, portray the followers of that religion as hypocrites for supporting or commiting terrorist acts, thereby criticizing the bad actions of a few while complimenting the religion. It's the only way to appeal to religious folks. The common question, "What would Jesus do?" is a perfect example of holding a god's followers up to that god's standards. Maggie

Let's not forget, one of these days, we'll have immigrants living next door to us who will recount, through word of mouth, film, books and litigation the horrors of having worked for pennies a day so that Americans could buy cheap clothes and electronics, thus maintaining our "freedom from high prices" standard of living. Already we are hearing from those frustrated people whose dictatorial or monarchical governments we have supported (Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia) so that we could have cheap oil, thus maintaining our "freedom" from unpatriotic gas-efficient cars. Singers and actors can make political statements, but they need to be intelligent about it. Americans are happiest when we feel like we're part of a team. And post-9/11, we were a team. That's why some folks miss the bygone days of immediately-post 9/11 when everyone had something in common with everyone else. The Dixie Chicks were thoughtless enough to attack this team's "coach"; the singers thus became the other team, the enemy. Perhaps Natalie could have pointed out that our opponent was bin Laden and not Hussein. A good part of this American team still doesn't know bin Laden from …

What Bleifuss says is true. It is wholly immoral that anyone hold back a cure for money, for ANY ailment, just as it is immoral that the only Americans who get good healthcare is its well-employed. If drug companies, and health care, were "un-privatized," we could look at ourselves in the mirror without shame. Mitch

And about upholding the law? Good laws are created to provide for the common good. And the first right, the right to life must come before the right to intellectual property. Why not use the right of Eminent Domain to solve this problem? Don't you remember the game we played in high school...imagine you are starving to death, as is your baby. Is it right or wrong for you to steal a loaf of bread?

The best medical care I ever used was in Germany: Government sponsored. The CEO of Merck is not in the lab coming up with medicines. His $70,000 per year scientists are. Dump the CEO, keep the scientists, pay them $100,000 with bonuses if they come up with new drugs, stay out of their way, and I'll bet you'll have some cures for things you didn't think could be cured.

Abstinence is good. But funding the right wing of the Republican party with taxpayer money is not. Who is the absolute genius who came up with this idea that can't be criticized without seeming to be pro-teen pregnancy? Those Reps are smart, aren't they? Maybe they SHOULD have control over our lives. Maybe some of their smart will rub off on us. Mag

By David in Canada: "If I had kids I would be telling them to wait and be faithful. My parents told me these things but I did not listen very well. Not too much regret but I sometimes wish I had waited longer and done some things differently." David's comment, unfortunately, is why you don't want to limit sex education to abstinence. Birth control information HAS to be included because, David, your kids may be just like you and choose to "burn out" sexually, like you did, rather than to remain chaste. Do you really want your son or daughter to …

When my cat hunts and then chomps on a mouse because he is bored with the flavor of dried catfood, I feel for the mouse, but I also appreciate the natural act of killing for meat. People aren't too different from animals; they also have a blood lust that, although it can be denied, why should it? Why shouldn't I whet my craving for a medium rare steak? And why shouldn't otherwise couch potatoes be allowed to shoot fish in a barrel [When killing things for fun isn't creepy enough...] if it gives them animal pleasure? Maybe your answer is "because …

Why should the media talk about Gannon when they can talk about Martha? My local NBC TV channel avoided talking about Stewart for 10 full minutes the other night before they finally gave in and covered her story. All the other channels had opened with it. WHO F'ing cares? Viewers really don't care. The lazy media is making it seem like MS's life is worth talking about because they have encamped well-paid reporters outside her prison and have to get some news to justify the expense. And how about Jacko? WHO F'ing cares what happens day to day in his trial? …
